What does it look like to be a Godly man? That’s a question I have been asking myself recently. Not just what does it look like to be a man, but what does it look like to be a Godly man? While I’ve been reflecting on this I’ve been thinking about who are the Godly men that I know. While I have a great dad, great mentors, and great friends, who show me regularly what it is to be a Godly man, none of them do this perfectly.
It was this that brought me back to Jesus, who while being fully God and fully man is the perfect example of what it is to be a Godly man. Jesus shows us this in a variety of ways. Jesus used his strength for the benefit of those who were weak. Jesus, out of his abundance, provided for those who had nothing. Jesus protected women, he didn’t abuse them. While these are all important attributes of a Godly man, I have been challenged by Jesus’ most striking attribute. His humility.
Philippians 2:3-11 talks profoundly about Christ’s humility. In particular verse 6 and 7 which says, “Though he was God, he did not consider equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges, took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being.”
Jesus gave up everything he is rightly due; praise, honour, power, kingship, all so that he could come and serve us. This for me is the definition of being a Godly man,
“A man who is willing to give their privilege and rights to others.”
Jesus did this for us by giving up his right to life, righteousness, and praise, to die for us, to take on our sin and to be spat on and beaten for us.
Godly men do the same, giving up their strength, their abundance, their rights for the benefit of those who do not have them.
It may be the willingness to stand up for those whose rights are being denied. It may be taking a family in who have been kicked out of their place. It may be using your privilege of being able to drive, to take somewhere they need to go even though it’s 30 minutes out of the way. It takes humility to do this, because it is the willingness to let go of what you deserve to give someone else something they deserve. This is why humility is something everyone who wants to be a Godly man should be cultivating, because when we cultivate humility in our character, we are imitating the humility of Christ.
This for me is the defining attribute of what it means to be a Godly man but also a Godly woman. I pray that each one of you reading this would be increasingly humble, sacrificing your rights and privileges for the benefit of others, growing in the humility of Christ.
And women, make sure you find this attribute in whatever man that you choose to partner with for the rest of your life.
Keep growing in humility,
